American Express Brings Over 1 Million Airbnb Listings to Its Travel Platform in Major Rewards Expansion

American Express is significantly expanding the footprint of its travel rewards ecosystem by bringing Airbnb into its platform, giving millions of cardholders a new way to earn rewards on accommodations while navigating an increasingly competitive premium credit card landscape.

Under a new partnership announced on Thursday, American Express will integrate more than 1 million Airbnb listings directly into its proprietary travel portal. The move allows eligible cardholders to earn rewards points when booking stays through the portal, bridging the gap between traditional hotel bookings and the booming short-term rental market. However, the initial launch of the partnership does not currently allow members to redeem their accumulated membership points to pay directly for Airbnb bookings, focusing instead on the earning side of the transaction.

This strategic addition substantially broadens the scope of Amex’s existing hotel portfolio. Prior to this integration, the portfolio primarily featured more than 3,400 upscale and luxury properties curated through its well-known Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection programs. By folding in over a million individual Airbnb listings, American Express is dramatically increasing the breadth of lodging options available to travelers who prefer the unique character, space, and geographic distribution of vacation rentals over traditional brick-and-mortar hotels.

The collaboration also introduces targeted financial incentives for high-end cardholders. American Express members who hold either the consumer or business versions of the Platinum Card can now apply their $600 annual lodging credit—previously referred to in program materials as the hotel credit—toward Airbnb’s higher-end Luxe stays. In addition, these cardholders can take advantage of a newly introduced $250 statement credit on eligible Airbnb Experiences, provided they first complete a qualifying Luxe booking.

Executives from both companies expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing its alignment with broader consumer trends in global tourism.

"We’re excited to bring more choice and flexibility to American Express Card Members with this exclusive partnership. Both of our companies exist to help people travel more and better, and this partnership helps people see more of the world by making travel more rewarding," said Juan David Borrero, head of partnerships at Airbnb, in a news release detailing the announcement.

The integration of Airbnb comes at a time when competition among issuers of premium credit cards continues to ramp up aggressively. Financial institutions are continually seeking innovative ways to differentiate their flagship products, secure the loyalty of high-spending consumers, and justify the escalating costs associated with top-tier card ownership.

Last year, American Express raised the annual fee on its premier Platinum card to $895. In turn, the financial services giant has been heavily investing in an expanded array of cardholder perks designed to deliver tangible value well beyond traditional financial transactions. These investments include the development of new airport lounges and exclusive access to big-ticket events and high-profile experiences, all aimed at attracting and retaining affluent customers who view travel and lifestyle perks as essential components of their card membership.

Earlier this month, American Express announced a substantial expansion of its proprietary Centurion Lounge network. The initiative includes comprehensive renovations scheduled for four existing lounges across the country, alongside plans for brand-new lounges at Newark Liberty International Airport and London Heathrow Airport. Notably, the forthcoming Newark lounge is slated to become the largest facility within the entire Centurion network, underscoring Amex’s commitment to enhancing the physical travel experience for its premium cardholders.

This wave of investment and partnership development also unfolds against the backdrop of sustained consumer demand for travel and luxury experiences. Despite persistent macroeconomic pressures, including rising prices for airfare, fuel, and traditional hotel accommodations, Americans continue to prioritize vacations and leisure getaways. A recent study conducted by travel insurance company Squaremouth found that more than half of surveyed travelers reported making no alterations to their travel plans over the summer, demonstrating a resilient appetite for exploration and leisure even in a higher-cost environment. By integrating Airbnb into its rewards platform right as these travel patterns hold steady, American Express is positioning its ecosystem to capture a larger share of consumer spending across both traditional hospitality and alternative short-term rentals.
