Walmart Unveils New Joint Walmart+ and Sam’s Club Plus Membership to Target Value-Seeking Shoppers

In a strategic move designed to appeal to budget-conscious consumers navigating persistent financial pressures, retail giant Walmart on Tuesday announced a first-of-its-kind joint membership program that bridges its namesake big-box chain with its warehouse club subsidiary, Sam’s Club.

The newly introduced subscription plan brings together Walmart+ and Sam’s Club Plus for an annual fee of $120. According to the company, the bundled price represents a substantial discount, saving customers nearly $100 compared to the cost of purchasing individual annual memberships for both retailers separately. However, the company noted that the joint offering will only be available on an annual basis, with no monthly payment plan currently offered, though both stores will continue to maintain their existing standalone subscription options for shoppers who prefer them.

The announcement reflects a broader strategic push by Walmart to leverage its dual retail models to capture a larger share of consumer wallets at a time when household budgets are frequently squeezed by elevated costs for everyday essentials, including groceries and fuel. By pairing Walmart’s strength in routine, everyday household replenishment with Sam’s Club’s capacity for bulk purchasing and warehouse-scale savings, the retailer aims to create a complementary shopping ecosystem that offers both convenience and deep value.

"We’re giving people a reason to expect more from their memberships," Walmart CEO John Furner said in a statement detailing the launch. "For $120 a year, we’re raising expectations for what a membership can deliver: more money in their pockets and more time to call their own."

Under the terms of the new bundled package, subscribers will gain comprehensive access to a wide array of benefits across both retail brands. These perks include entry into Sam’s Club warehouse locations, free delivery services originating from both Walmart and Sam’s Club stores, fuel savings at participating gas stations, and a subscription to major streaming services Peacock or Paramount+. Additionally, members will earn 2% Sam’s Club cash rewards on eligible purchases made at the warehouse division. For consumers who already maintain active accounts with both individual retailers, the company has established a mechanism allowing them to easily link their existing accounts to unlock the new discounted bundled rate.

The launch of the joint membership arrives against the backdrop of shifting consumer behaviors and evolving retail economics. While inflationary pressures have stretched consumer budgets over recent cycles, Walmart has continually positioned itself as a primary destination for value-seeking shoppers looking to stretch their dollars.

The retailer’s financial standing and outlook were recently highlighted during its fiscal second-quarter earnings report in August. At that time, Walmart updated its full-year guidance upward, reflecting resilient demand across its store networks. Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey noted during a discussion with CNBC that consumer spending had remained remarkably steady despite headwinds from higher fuel prices. Despite the upbeat outlook and raised guidance, Walmart’s stock experienced a modest pullback following the earnings announcement as specific sales projections failed to fully satisfy heightened expectations on Wall Street.

During the same earnings presentation, Rainey emphasized that the company had proactively lowered prices across multiple product categories, including beef, to maintain its competitive edge. He asserted that Walmart remains exceptionally well-positioned to weather ongoing economic uncertainty, largely due to its foundational emphasis on everyday low prices, unmatched operational scale, and diversified retail footprint.

Meanwhile, Sam’s Club has continued to serve as a powerful growth engine for the broader corporation. During the fiscal second quarter, Sam’s Club posted a notable 26% increase in e-commerce sales, propelled by higher transaction volumes and steady membership growth. The warehouse division, which also operates its own fuel station network, reported robust net sales totaling $25.7 billion, inclusive of fuel revenue, for the period.

The expansion of membership offerings aligns directly with Walmart’s broader corporate strategy to accelerate revenue growth within high-margin business segments. Membership revenue has emerged as an increasingly vital contributor to the company’s financial performance. In the fiscal second quarter, Walmart reported a 17% global increase in revenue generated from memberships, driven in part by Walmart+ net additions reaching a record high for a second quarter. Similarly, membership revenue at Sam’s Club grew by 6% over the same timeframe.

As part of the rollout of the new joint membership tier, Walmart announced that its extensive workforce will also share in the benefits. Employees across both Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations will receive the joint membership as a standard component of their employee benefits package, extending the value proposition directly to the company’s associates.

Looking ahead to the financial impact of the program, Walmart management indicated that any costs or operational adjustments associated with implementing the new membership structure are anticipated to be minimal. The company stated that these changes are not expected to materially impact its financial guidance for either the fiscal third quarter or the full fiscal year.
