X Introduces Obstructive "Jump Scare" Hand to Push Post Promotion Feature

Some user interface changes and nudges, such as bright buttons urging you to subscribe or upgrade within apps, are mildly annoying but generally easy to ignore. Others, however, are so glaringly obstructive and in your face that they evoke a visceral reaction, making users want to toss their phones across the room. X’s latest push to encourage users to promote their posts falls squarely into the latter category, catching the platform’s user base completely off guard with an aggressive new visual prompt.

Over a 24-hour period, a growing number of users reported encountering a mysterious, out-of-nowhere graphic featuring a hand pointing directly toward the "promote" button while they were in the middle of drafting a post. This sudden UI element has irked people across the board, disrupting standard posting workflows and triggering widespread complaints online. Because the rollout coincided with the days leading up to Halloween, some speculated that the unexpected graphic might be an early seasonal prank meant to spook users, although X has not officially confirmed any such intent. Even for users who might otherwise be interested in paying to amplify their content, the aggressive nature of the hand animation has proven jarring enough to potentially scare them off entirely.

The rollout has reignited conversations about X’s aggressive product tactics and growth strategies. Responding to the phenomenon on the platform, Dylan Abruscato, president of the TBPN podcast, remarked that the engagement trick was the "most Nikita-coded thing I’ve ever seen." The comment was a direct nod to the aggressive growth tactics historically associated with Nikita Bier, X’s former head of product.

Bier stepped down from his role at X in August after serving nearly a year at the helm of the platform’s product division. The transition marked another notable chapter in the leadership shifts that have characterized the social media company under its current ownership. Just as the platform was adjusting to life after Bier, a major leadership update arrived on Monday when Peter Sellis—a former head of product for Snap and Discord, and Bier’s former boss—announced that he has officially taken over as X’s new product chief.

In a post announcing his new role, Sellis expressed enthusiasm for joining the team at X to lead product development. Drawing a link between his new professional home and Elon Musk’s broader corporate portfolio, Sellis noted that he is a massive believer in SpaceX’s mission to extend human consciousness to the stars, adding that it was time to "make shitposting multiplanetary." He also emphasized his enduring view that X remains the premier destination for discovering what is happening globally in real time and facilitating open public discourse.

Despite Sellis stepping into the product leadership position, it remains unclear whether the sudden appearance of the pointing hand was a direct initiative of his administration or a legacy feature clearing its final testing hurdles. Representatives for X were reached for comment regarding the origin and long-term plans for the pointing hand interface element, but a response had not been received at the time of publication.
