Stellantis Shares Surge as Third-Quarter Results Boost Confidence in 60 Billion Euro Turnaround Plan

Shares of Stellantis experienced a significant boost on Wednesday as the European automotive giant released its third-quarter financial results, demonstrating tangible progress in its ambitious 60 billion euro turnaround plan. Investors welcomed the updates, pushing the automaker’s stock higher across multiple international exchanges as management reaffirmed its crucial financial guidance for the coming years, even as broader industry headwinds continue to pressure competitors.

During the third quarter, the parent company of iconic brands such as Chrysler and Jeep reported revenues of 37.6 billion euros. This figure represents a 1% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. More notably, the automaker’s adjusted operating income saw a dramatic rebound, soaring 184% to 256 million euros, up sharply from just 90 million euros a year earlier.

The company’s industrial free cash flow also demonstrated measurable improvement, narrowing to negative 4 billion euros compared to negative 4.3 billion euros recorded in the prior-year period. Alongside these financial metrics, Stellantis officially reconfirmed its 2026 full-year guidance. Most importantly for market watchers, the company reiterated its core target of achieving positive free cash flow next year, a milestone that remains a central focus for institutional and retail investors alike.

Wall Street analysts responded positively to the update, noting that while the quarter itself presented certain operational softness, the company’s ability to maintain its forward-looking targets stood in stark contrast to broader industry trends.

"Q3 was soft, but consensus expectations were far lower. Key here is that ’26 Guidance was maintained while other auto OEMs and suppliers are cutting on elevated costs," said Tom Narayan, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, in an investor note published Wednesday.

The market reaction was swift and pronounced. On the New York Stock Exchange, Stellantis shares climbed 13% on Wednesday to close at $4.69. Meanwhile, shares trading in Milan finished the session up 15.4% at 4.28 euros. Despite these substantial single-day gains, shares in both major markets remain sharply lower on a year-to-date basis as the company continues to navigate a transitional period.

During a presentation to investors on Wednesday, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa emphasized that the organization is currently operating ahead of schedule regarding its comprehensive turnaround strategy, which was initially unveiled to the public in May. Filosa stated that Stellantis now expects to exceed its previously announced cost-cutting objectives, which aimed to slash 6 billion euros in expenses by 2028, with 2.4 billion euros of those reductions slated to take effect at the start of 2027.

"We are very confident in reaffirming our ’26 guidance. Those include ’27 free cash flow positive," Filosa remarked during the investor briefing, addressing lingering market skepticism regarding the carmaker’s timeline for financial stabilization.

The company’s reaffirmed 2026 financial guidance incorporates a projected mid-single-digit percentage increase in net revenue, alongside a low-single-digit adjusted operating margin. The overarching turnaround plan itself relies heavily on a massive capital allocation strategy, featuring a planned investment of 36 billion euros dedicated to refreshing and expanding its diverse portfolio of automotive brands. Notably, approximately 60% of this capital is earmarked for the company’s struggling North American operations. The multi-year strategy centers on introducing entirely new vehicle lineups, comprehensive model refreshes, and the integration of cutting-edge automotive technologies across its product ecosystem.

Looking further ahead, Stellantis has outlined ambitious long-term financial targets. The automaker is aiming for approximately 23% revenue growth over the decade, scaling from 154 billion euros recorded last year to 190 billion euros by 2030, alongside an anticipated 7% adjusted operating margin by the end of the decade.

China Competition

While Stellantis works to execute its internal turnaround, the broader automotive landscape presents distinct geographical challenges, particularly in Asia. European carmakers, including Stellantis, have faced severe headwinds in China as domestic manufacturers such as Xiaomi, BYD, and Geely rapidly capture market share and dramatically intensify competition within the world’s largest automotive market.

The pressure in the region is widespread across legacy European brands. Just this week, German luxury carmaker Porsche announced plans to reduce its exposure to China as local car sales continue to decline. Simultaneously, Mercedes-Benz reported that its third-quarter car sales slumped considerably, citing an increasingly challenging market environment within the country.

Earlier this month, Filosa addressed these competitive pressures in an interview with CNBC, asserting that European regulators must take more aggressive action to incentivize domestic manufacturing and protect local carmakers from the mounting wave of affordable Chinese electric vehicles and traditional rivals.

Filosa advocated for policy frameworks and regulatory measures that actively incentivize, reward, and protect companies that demonstrate native capabilities in designing and engineering vehicles within the region, framing the challenge as a critical issue for the future industrial base of Europe.
