Elon Musk Invests $1 Billion in Skydance Following Massive Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger

Tech billionaire and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has made a significant financial play in the entertainment industry, investing roughly $1 billion into Skydance Corp., according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the transaction publicly.

The high-profile capital injection arrives at a critical juncture for Skydance as the newly formed media giant embarks on an aggressive corporate restructuring and cost-cutting campaign. The transaction coincides with the finalized consolidation of Hollywood powerhouses following Paramount’s closed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on Oct. 6. The newly combined corporate entity formally assumed the name Skydance, uniting two storied film studios, a robust portfolio of television networks, two major news divisions, and two prominent streaming services in Paramount+ and HBO Max.

At the helm of this massive undertaking are co-CEOs David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz. The executive pair faces the formidable task of streamlining operations across multiple legacy organizations, integrating vast libraries of intellectual property, and harmonizing corporate functions. However, the path forward involves navigating immense financial obligations. Skydance has publicly stated that it expects to achieve $6 billion in cost savings over a three-year period, a crucial target as the company confronts a heavy debt burden nearing $80 billion.

Musk’s $1 billion commitment is part of a broader, ongoing initiative by Skydance to secure fresh equity investments to shore up its balance sheet during this transitional phase. The development was initially reported Thursday by Semafor. Representatives for both Elon Musk and Skydance did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment from CNBC regarding the terms and strategic nature of the investment. On Wall Street, market reaction was muted as shares of Skydance traded down about 1% on Thursday following the widespread reporting of the capital raise.

The investment also highlights the deepening professional and personal ties between the Ellison family and Elon Musk, a relationship rooted in Silicon Valley and technology investments spanning over a decade. David Ellison’s father, billionaire Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, shares a well-documented history of financial collaboration with Musk. Most notably, the elder Ellison provided a $1 billion investment to support Musk’s high-profile 2022 acquisition of the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, which has since been rebranded as X.

Furthermore, Larry Ellison’s financial backing of Musk’s ventures dates back to 2018, when the Oracle chief invested heavily in electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla and subsequently served a tenure on the company’s board of directors. The deep-pocketed tech pioneer has continued to exert immense financial influence across multiple sectors. Larry Ellison’s personal financial muscle was famously demonstrated when he personally guaranteed more than $40 billion of equity financing to help facilitate Paramount’s ambitious corporate takeover bid for Warner Bros. Discovery, paving the way for the creation of the current media conglomerate now managed by his son.
