EBay to Cut 9% of Workforce in Second Major Reduction This Year as Online Marketplace Streamlines Operations

EBay is moving to slash approximately 9% of its workforce, impacting about 1,000 full-time employees, as part of a broader corporate restructuring designed to streamline operations and pivot resources toward its fastest-growing business segments, a company spokesperson confirmed.

The latest workforce reduction marks the second major round of layoffs for the pioneering e-commerce marketplace this year. It follows a 6% cut executed in February that affected roughly 800 employees. Over recent years, eBay has systematically downsized its overall headcount while simultaneously increasing capital expenditures toward technological advancements, notably artificial intelligence and platform modernization.

According to a company spokesperson, the difficult decision was made to position the firm for future success in an increasingly competitive digital retail landscape. "As we work to capture the significant opportunity ahead, this step was taken to ensure we continue to operate from a position of strength by aligning our teams and resources with our top strategic priorities," the spokesperson said in an official statement.

Despite the elimination of approximately 1,000 roles, eBay indicated that it will not institute a blanket hiring freeze across the entire organization. The company plans to continue recruiting talent in targeted sectors, specifically focusing on priority areas that directly align with its refreshed corporate strategy. Following these adjustments, the marketplace’s total workforce will see a downward adjustment from its baseline figures, which stood at roughly 12,300 employees at the close of 2025.

The strategic shift first came to light via an internal memo distributed to staff by Chief Executive Officer Jamie Iannone, which was initially reported by Reuters. In the communication to employees, Iannone maintained an optimistic tone regarding the underlying health of the business, writing in part, "Our strategy is working."

"Continuing to capture the significant opportunity ahead requires us to make thoughtful choices about where we focus and invest," Iannone elaborated in the memo seen by Reuters. The messaging underscores executive leadership’s intent to prune legacy or non-core projects to concentrate financial and human capital where the company perceives the highest potential for long-term growth and market share expansion.

The ongoing downsizing coincides with a transformative period of portfolio reshaping for eBay. Beyond internal reorganization and heavy investments in artificial intelligence capabilities, the platform has actively pursued aggressive inorganic growth strategies. Most notably, eBay completed the acquisition of used clothing resale platform Depop from Etsy earlier this year. The $1.4 billion transaction, which was finalized in July, brought in a brand with a remarkably strong and loyal customer base consisting primarily of Gen Z and millennial consumers.

The integration of Depop represents a crucial pillar in eBay’s broader ambition to capture the booming market for secondhand fashion and recommerce, a sector that has experienced rapid expansion as younger consumers increasingly prioritize sustainability and value. However, absorbing a major acquisition while simultaneously trimming operational overhead and refocusing internal teams requires careful navigation by executive leadership.

Wall Street’s initial reaction to the restructuring announcement was muted yet stable. Shares of eBay rose approximately 1% in Wednesday morning trading, indicating that investors view the workforce reduction and operational streamlining as a disciplined, if painful, measure to protect margins and drive strategic efficiency in a competitive e-commerce environment.

The ripple effects of these corporate changes will be closely monitored by industry analysts and employees alike as eBay works to execute its vision for sustainable, technology-driven growth while managing the human cost of its ongoing transformation.
