Salesforce Expands Defense Tech Footprint with $375 Million Acquisition of Military AI Startup Rune Technologies

CRM giant Salesforce has agreed to acquire Rune Technologies, an artificial intelligence startup specializing in military logistics and supply chain forecasting, for $375 million in cash and stock. The deal, which was initially reported by Resilience Media, represents the latest strategic move by Salesforce to cement its position within the rapidly expanding defense technology sector.

Rune Technologies, founded in 2024, has quickly made a name for itself by developing specialized AI software designed to assist the United States military in predicting supply needs and streamlining logistics directly from the field. By integrating Rune’s frontline logistics data capabilities, Salesforce aims to expand the scope of Missionforce—its dedicated business unit serving national security and defense agencies—allowing it to move beyond traditional back-office administrative planning and into active battlefield operations support.

The acquisition highlights the extraordinary momentum behind Missionforce since its launch last year. According to Salesforce, the business unit has experienced an 80% year-over-year growth rate, a surge heavily propelled by a massive, newly secured 10-year, $5.6 billion contract with the U.S. Army. As tech giants increasingly eye public sector contracts and defense modernization initiatives, the integration of specialized tactical AI platforms like Rune provides legacy enterprise software providers with critical capabilities tailored to the complex demands of modern military operations.

Salesforce’s M&A spree continues with a reported $375M deal for defense tech startup Rune

In a remarkably short operating history, Rune Technologies has managed to secure significant financial backing from prominent venture capital firms and strategic investors. Since its inception, the startup has raised a total of $30 million. Its investor roster includes industry heavyweights such as Andreessen Horowitz, Point72 Ventures, and IQT, the CIA-backed nonprofit venture firm historically known as In-Q-Tel. The startup’s valuation saw a substantial upward trajectory last year when it closed a Series A funding round led by Human Capital, which pegged Rune at a $127 million valuation, according to data from PitchBook.

The acquisition of Rune Technologies is just one piece of an aggressive and expansive M&A strategy deployed by Salesforce throughout the year. The San Francisco-headquartered customer relationship management giant has engaged in a sweeping shopping spree, snapping up several prominent technology companies to fortify its ecosystem. Among these major transactions, Salesforce previously agreed to acquire AI agent platform Fin—formerly known as Intercom—for a staggering $3.6 billion. Additionally, the company purchased Qualified for $1.2 billion and signed an agreement to acquire Listen Labs following a high-profile negotiation that saw the startup walk away from a $125 million Series C term sheet at a $1.5 billion valuation.

Despite the significant valuation of the Rune transaction and its strategic implications for Salesforce’s defense sector ambitions, representatives for Salesforce did not respond to requests for comment regarding the definitive agreement. As the transaction moves through the customary closing processes, the integration of Rune’s frontline tactical systems into the broader Missionforce ecosystem is expected to play a pivotal role in how Salesforce delivers advanced artificial intelligence solutions to the nation’s defense and security agencies.
